Director and multicore

$

Hi all,

a client is asking us to deploy a Windows 2008. He needs 8 CPU (max supported by win2k8) but multicores, the only way to have a physical-like 8CPU-quad cores server .

I see that I can perform this action from vCenter, but nothing similar in vCloud Director (clients doesn't have access to vCenter).

Since is strongly not advisable to make changes in a Vcenter managed by vCD, is there any other solution to reach this goal?

Thank you very much!

Raf

Vcloud director error gray console page

After installing vcloud director on RHE 6.5 web console fails to open, page is just a gray back ground, which then times out.

Cell.log screen shot attached. Error starting application: Unable to decrypt encrypted property: "jms.user.system.password". Message: Error decrypting data.

Service vmware-vcd status comes back as vmware-vcd-cell is dead, but pidfile exists.

Some help to resolve this would be great

Thanks.

None of the cells have a vCenter proxy service running

Ran into this issue last night.  I've been reading several sources to see if I can pin point the cause but no luck so far other than communication between the cell and the db was impacted.  I've followed the instructions in KB 1035506 but no change.  I've shutdown the cell via the service command and then also tried with the cell management tool, no difference.  The QRTZ tables get cleared of all their entries but once I start up the cell again they seem to populate with the same set of records.

I'm on vCloud 5.1.2.1068441 and using MS-SQL 2012.  If anyone has any suggestions of where to look next it would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Vcloud SNAT RULES

Hi to everyone,

I have built a Vcloud Director 5.1 lab with Vshield 5.1.2 with following spec:

one External network pointing to internet with network 192.168.0.0/24 and a VCD network with 172.16.1.0/24 connected to VSHIELDEDGE.

If i connect the VCD network to VAPP my ping to EXTERNAL NETWORK not working.

I also create a SNAT rule from the address of VAPP (172.16.1.100) to SUBIP allocated (192.168.0.60) in the VEDGE in fact when i try to ping my external gateway (192.168.0.5) the

translated IP (192.168.0.60) say destination unreachable..

I want to know what is the exactly configuration of the VCD network to ping my external network gateway and if Vshield need two interfaces rahter than one by default.

Any advice is appreciated and some considerations about this issue.

Thanks

Giovanni

what's the impact to vCloud Director if we change/reinstall vShield Manager

If we reinstall vShield Manager with a new IP address, then connect it back to the vCenter server, what's the impact to the existing Provider vDC in vCloud?  Do we need recreate the Provider vDC as well, specially for VXLAN? Does anyone have a idea?

Thank you,

vCD - Permissions between user and at the vApp

$

Hi

>> Does someone know if there is a guide that combines the permissions of a user at the org level (vApp User, vApp Author), and the permissions allowed at a vApp level ?

The vmware help has :
Select an access level for the users and groups.

Option Description -
Full control - Users can open, start, save a vApp as a vApp template (Add to Catalog), change the owner, copy to a catalog, and modify properties.
Read/write -  Users can open, start, save a vApp as a vApp template (Add to Catalog), copy to catalog, and modify properties.
Read only -  Users only have read access to a vApp.

>> This is not very helpful as what modify means is not explored, i assume in means "delete" as well.

The context is we had a user accidentially delete one of our key VMs today.

Many thanks

External IP Addresses not pinging

Hi

I have an issue with some of my vApps in that they have an external IP Address assigned but I cannot ping them successfully (destination host unreachable).  Sounds like a routing issue but not sure where.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Recent Tasks displays "Taking virtual machine screenshot " followed by "Delete File"

In the past couple of days, I've noticed some Recent Tasks in vCenter when I log on to my vCloud director web portal. After logging in and selecting My Cloud, a bunch of Recent Task appear stating "Taking virtual machine screenshot " followed by "delete file" I don't know what could be causing these tasks to start. According to "Details about the task in vCenter Server: Take virtual machine screenshot (2001467)" KB,  I've checked my vmware.log file to see if there are any corruptions to the vm's and did not see any issues. I've restarted the services on the cells and restarted the cells themselves, which did not resolve the issue. I do have a service request in with vmware, they have asked me to restart the management agents on the host. Being that I can not restart them until after business hours, I'm hoping to find some other options until I can restart the management service on the esxi hosts. I'm currently on vCloud director 5.5 and vCenter server 5.1.

How to get VIM Port Group Reference for Adding External Network

$

I am trying to add an external network through the VCD REST API. I know the vCenter server and can get an extensions HREF to that server. The GET response for that HREF does not provide a link for networks for me to get the managed object reference inside of vSphere that I need to add an External Network. Is there a way to get the reference from the VCD API or do I have to resort to getting it from vSphere itself? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

PS. I see that the VCD 1.5 API has introduced a new networks link to get this information. Any way in 1.0 to accomplish this?

vCD Provisioned space -

>> Does someone how if there is a succint explnation of provisioned space as presented in the end user GUI (i am a org admin) with some graphics ?

http://pubs.vmware.com/vcd-51/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vcd_51_admin_guide.pdf tries to do something but fails, no summary or graphics.

We have a lot of thin provisioned, linked clone VMs and i want to get a feel on how much we can over allocate disk space.

Also in the mix is snapshots, most VMs don't have snapshots but i think the provsioning assumes all VMs will have snapshots....

about vcloud template

$

Hello,

We are using VMware vCloud Director 5.5.

We use "enable fast provisioning" function, so it uses "link clone" mode.

In the past, we used VMware vCenter Lab Manager, we can clearly know how many VMs every template has deployed.

Current we want to remove some template, but we don't know if the template is using by VMs.

Who has good way  to solve it?

Thanks.

Migrate from 5.1 appliance to 5.1 on RHEL?

$

Hi There,

I have an 5.1 environment with a single cell, that was built by deploying the applicance, rather than on RHEL. This environment is in use and allready configured.

As this is not supported in a production environment, i would like to deploy a RHEL VM and install VCloud in this, with a seperate SQL DB. (I might even upgrade the appliance to v5.5 so that i can have CentOs as my OS, and be supported by VMWare as i read this somewhere recently)

Is there any way of moving from one to the other while keeping the current config?

Thanks in advance..

vCloud Media Upload Error: Thumbprint Mismatch

$

I am receiving an error when uploading media into a catalog of any organization. This is across the board with any type of media that is uploaded (ovf, iso, etc). I only receive the error when uploading through my external DNS name. If i hit the web server by IP it works fine. I am using a signed wild-card certificate for both VMRC and HTTPS.

"Target SSL fingerprint mismatch detected (expected: [thumbprint], actual: )."

I have checked the SSL certs on my cells and everything is matching up correctly. ive looked in the logs but have ran out of places to look. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Trying to use the VMRC console with Ubuntu 13.10 and Firefox 25

$

A little background

I have the console working fine in Ubuntu 12.04 and Firefox 25, but in another partition I have installed 13.10 to test before upgrading, the console onto the vcloud VM's does not work.

It attempts to connect, but then fails with no error.

Here are the versions on the working OS:

VMware Remote Console Plug-in for vCloud Director 1.5

Shockwave Flash 11.2 r202

Firefox 25

Ubuntu 12.04.3 fully patch -  3.8.0-29-generic kernel

As the version of the browser and flash are the same , also the vcloud director plugin is the same, is there another OS component that could be causing this problem?

Is anyone else seeing this, or come across a similar problem.

Are there newer versions of the VMRC plugin that I could try, I have looked and not been able to see one.

Thanks in advance

Five CS24-SC Servers in vCD cluster. Is proposed configuration possible?

$

I'm hoping to pick up several (cheap) servers to each run ESXi 5.5, hopefully building out a vCD cluster for a lab environment.  First question; does anyone have luck installing ESXi 5.5 on these servers?

Assuming vCD was possible, I'd have to come up with a shared storage solution.  I do not have a separate NAS server, so I've been toying with the idea of installing ESXi to and booting from a 16GB USB thumb at each server.  I also have 5 2TB 7200 RPM SATA drives (nothing fancy, but one for each server).  For shared storage, I was then thinking of running one minimal Ubuntu VM per server (Off the USB or 2TB SATA) where each VM would be a "node" for some distributed FS like GlusterFS.  The aggregated SATA disks would then be accessible to the vCD cluster via NFS.

Does that setup even sound feasible?  How might you tweak it (ex. suck it up and build a separate NAS server)?  Any complaints or tips and tricks with GlusterFS?

Many thanks, and do note...this is as much a science project as it is a lab build out.  Suggestions are very much welcomed!

Provider VDC primary resource pool.

We have merged 3 provider VDC's down to a single provider.  After doing this we have 3 resource pools associated with the provider.  Previously we had a single cluster backing a single provider.  Now we have 3 clusters backing a single provider.  After doing this we see a check mark next to one of the resource pools listing it as the "primary" and it appears that all new workloads are placed in this resource pool.  We don't see any way of specifying the primary resource pool.  How is this set?  Does vCD make some sort of election?  We want to be able to control the primary if possible.  The only way we've seen so far to get a workload to launch on another resource pool is by disbling the hosts backing that resource pool.
