Mouse wierdness but only in vcloud director console.

Morning all,

 

So got an issue with one specific VM, its a Windows 7 Enterprise VM with the latest VMtools installed.  and the mouse and video drivers are correct.

 

Problem is when I goto the console in Vcloud director I get stuttering mouse performance,  but if i go onto the VM via vsphere console then the mouse is fine. Now if I go into the vcloud console on any other VM then the mouse performance is ok.  so it only seems to be that specific VM and only when using the vcloud console.

 

anyone seen this before?

RESTful programming with Perl

Hello All, being a novice of REST API i would like to clarify some questions which are hovering in front of me from the time i have started learning about it.

 

1. SDK's are available to build clients and supported languages are .NET, JAVA and PHP(as seperate SDK are already provided). Can we use RESTful programming conventions along with PERL to build RESTful Clients(Commad-line tool) of VMware vCloud Director??

 

2.  Hope with the help of REST,we would be able to build clients which can performs all tasks supported by vCloud Director?? like creating a provider vDC to deletion of it, creating an organization to removal of it, User , groups, attaching a vCenter...etc??

 

3. What i understood from vCloud API document is that we could use any language which supports HTTP/HTTPS POST and GET methods for representational state transfer of objects on vCloud director? is that true?

Changing vCloud Director Service Folder

We are using 1.5.2 version of vCloud Director. I want to change the Service Folder which is the default main folder created in vCenter for vCloud Director. Is it possible?

vCloud Director SSL/TLS weaknesses

Hi!

 

I've found some SSL/TLS weaknesses after doing a security review on a test implementation of vCloud Director. It's the finds on scans against the https front that concerns me:

 

- Only TLS 1.0/SSL 3.0 is supported and this in conjuncture with the support/priority of weak CBC block ciphers suites makes it vulnerable to "recent" attacks such as the BEAST attack: https://community.qualys.com/blogs/securitylabs/2011/10/17/mitigating-the-beast-attack-on-tls

 

- The SSL/TLS implementation supports Client-Initiated Renegotiation. This is very bad since you easily can perform Denial of Service-attacks against it. I'm not even talking about distributed ones (DDoS). Since the SSL/TLS handshake is way more demanding for the server than the client, you can easily exhaust it by spamming handshake renegotiating requests from a single client. There are even script kiddie tools out there to make this very easy and convenient for people to try. Now, these are not particularly new weaknesses, so I find it odd that they are not mitigated here.

 

I've read the vCloud Director hardening guide and VMware recommends deploying a Web Application Firewall (WAF) in front of vCloud Director cells. While of course a good idea, it's not always feasible in small scale deployments.

 

I've done my share of BEAST mitigation and such in web deployments using Apache. However, vCloud Director seem to have an own bundled Java solution. No AJP proxying from Apache or such either.

 

So, has anyone figured out how to secure this? I've looked around in /opt/vmware/vcloud-director/etc but found nothing obvious to tweak so far.

Unable to create Org vDC Network (Cisco VSG + VNMC)

I am trying to create a Org vDC Network on a Port Group backed Network Pool. The port group are configured on a Cisco N1Kv and its connected to VNMC and VSG for Security Profile & Gateways. But when ever i try to create a Isolated Org vDC network on a port group it fails. And, throw this error

 

Cannot deploy organization VDC network (xxxxx) Deployment of edge gateway VDC_NETWORK_NAME failed. com.vmware.vcloud.fabric.nsm.error.VsmException: VSM response error (214): Not licensed for Entity : vshield-edge feature :  : add on : ; majorErrorCode=500; minorErrorCode=NETWORK_INTERNAL_SERVER; vendorSpecificErrorCode=null; (Workflow:Wait for a task / Throw exception (item5)#1)

 

Any ideas ? Thanks

vApp/VM deploy flow in vCloud Director

    I am trying to understand why VCD need to communicate to vCenter for  each VM deployment?

 

example:- If my vcenter is down, i am unable to deploy the VM's from VCD.

Timeout Error While Creating Provider vDC on new vCloud Director Install

I created my vCloud environment, following the "evaluation cloud" directions as outlined in the "VMW-cCloud-Director1_5-EvalGuide.pdf" doc. 

 

Everything seemed to have been moving smoothly until I tried to create my first provider vDC.  When trying that procedure, a couple of the tasks timed out on me.  See the attached screen shot for the detail view of the error; note, I have two ESXi hosts in the cluster and there is an identical error for each of them.

vm credentials for vDC appliance 5.1.x

So, I can find plenty of documentation of the credentials that can get you into the console of the appliance for 1.5, like:

But these creds root/Default0 don't work for my install, which is 5.1.x.  And when I look at the evaluation guide for the newer version, it no longer even says what the credentials should be, as it did on page 59 of the 1.5 version of that doc. 

 

So, what credentials will get me in?

vCloud Director Branding CSS sugestions

Hello,

 

I'm trying to do the branding on our implementation of the vCloud Director and am running into troubles getting rid of the blue on some accented widgets, as follows:

 

  • Since the buttons seem to be MX and not Spark, I can't seem to be able to change the accent colour on them (no :[up|down|over]andselected css selectors) using any way that I can think of.
  • I also have blue in the currently selected button of the mx|ToggleButtonBar.
  • And the final touch of blue that I need to replace is in the wizards, for the selection of the current step.
  • I am also trying to change the colour of the tabbuttonbar background (not the buttons) from it's current gray to black.
  • And finally trying to add a margin (not border or padding) to the .innerShell in order to make the organization name font larger on top. What widget is used for the organization name? Can I add an icon or background image with padding for the text to it?
  • I've attached screenshots to this short post highlighting the troubles I'm having.
  • Bonus: Can we change the icons in any way? Blue is no an allowed colour and all the icons are all blueish.
  • Bonus2: Can we flatten the buttons somehow? Our guidelines don't allow them and would rather have simple flat and shadow-less buttons.

 

Otherwise, I've managed to embed and change the font and colours as per our coorporate guidelines. We are sincerely waiting for a full HTML5 UI in a future major release.

Error While connecting to the vSphere Profile-Driven Storage Service.

Hi

 

    I am getting  the "Error While connecting to the vSphere Profile-Driven Storage Service" daily once, even thought my vcenter is working fine. Once i received this message, i will do the "Refresh Storage Profiles" on the vcenter the I will get  Green Color Check mark on the status.

 

    Can some one explain about this error. Thank you inadvance.

vCD 5.1.1 transfer spooling?

Transfer operations in our environment, between vDC's or catalogs, that are backed by different vCenters in a cell, are causing the transfers to spool to ..../vcloud-director/tmp.....instead of the normal ...../data/transfer (NFS) spooling space. We discovered this after a large vApp transfer, that overtook the availible local space on the cell, and crashed it hard. Anyone else experienced this, before i open an case?

How to export/import Labmanager library configuration to vcloud

Export a labmanager 4 library configurations and then import to vcloud director 5.1.

Could someone explain how we can do these tasks the best way between our 2 environments?

vCloud Director as a DR Site

I have a requirement to provide Business Continuity / Disaster Recovery for several different businesses.

 

i.e. They host there own services in house either on VMware or Physical or a mixture of both.

 

The requirement would be to replicate using vSphere, SRM, Veeam, Zerto etc to a vCloud Director install hosted by a third party.

 

Is this functionality supported?

vCD Sysprep

Hi

 

We are finding that our templates once deployed has lost their original local users and we only get prompted for user "user".

 

I found a greyed out screen showing a radio button with "generate password" and a random password.

 

The OS was win7, we don't want this. We want our dev / test users to know the admin password to be able to get into vm's.

 

>> How do we tell vCD to do what it needs to wrt. sysprep but leave local users alone!!

vCD - VM consolidation - Rights?

Is it true that the consolidation of VMs is only possible at the administrator level, not even the Organisational Administrator ?

i.e. it can't be delegates such as catalog use ?

 

We are coming from Lab Manager environment, where we could see a long deployment chain, and consolidate for better performance.

Fresh install of vCloud Director 1.5 fails to set up ESXi 5.1.0 hosts

Hello dear community .

 

I have the following error message when  trying to create a 'Provider-VDC' on my freshly installed vCloud director appliance :


"Could not retrieve state for sequence: seq_os".

 

This is a lab/evaluation/proof of concept environment :

 

- 3 Esxi host 5.1.0 build 799733 running under workstation

- Vcloud director running on Centos 6.4 64 bits . The version of vcloud director is 1.5.0.464915

- Microssoft sql database 2008 r2 .

-vcenter virtual appliance 5.1.0

 

I already fin this thread here http://communities.vmware.com/thread/327222?start=0 but not sure if the fix described in this thread will do the trick in my case . I am also a complete newby in SQL database and I am having trouble to add a new entry to the [os_id] table , which is more or less the workaround described in the thread .

 

Any help will be appreciated ,

Storage Profiles not retained

I'm having a issue where a vApp with two VM's one VM configured with a storage profile of "fast" and one VM configured with a storage profile of "slow" when saved to the catalog defaults to only a single storage profile requring a full copy for the VM that is not on the default.  If I change it once it is in the catalog back to what it was orignally it will clone out as expected.

 

Is this a bug or expected behivor?

Catalogs, templates and storage...

Hi

 

I am after comments of vCD functionality.

 

I hoped that VM templates in the catalogs could all be placed in the one storage, lets say thin+silver storage (where silver is lower IOPs than Gold).

 

Then at deployment time, these could be used in whatever storage area you wanted, creating shadow copies.

 

Goal - one primary set of base template vms

base_thin deployed to thin-fast silver area created a linked clone

base_thin deployed to thin-fast gold area, creates a shadow vm template and a linked clone

base_thin deployed to a thick-fast area, creates a shadow copy of template and a linked clone

base_thin deployed to a thick-full-clone area, creates a full thick clone in this area

 

(where fast means linled clone storage)

 

Some of my testing suggests this might not be the case so i am after the rules / comments ?

 

One if vmware failings is its documentation, the admin and user manuals are just textual without any diagrams, examples or context.

This makes understabding the system difficult.
