New 9.7 Appliance Install Issues

Before we go moving to 9.7 and dealing with the SQL to Postgres issues i decided to build a small lab vCloud instance.

I installed the VCD appliance and left all the settings default where possible.

My understanding is that with this basic deployment that VCD would use its internal Postgres DB.

 

However on boot of the VM after the OVF deployment i am met with this error:

No nodes found in cluster, this likely means PostgreSQL is not running on this node. Consult the management UI from another node where PostgreSQL is running. Otherwise, check /opt/vmware/var/log/vcd/vcd_ova_ui_app.log if you think this is an error.

 

 

This is a bit odd, so i redeployed the OVF. Same issue.

Does the new appliance not have a DB and if it does what the heck am i doing wrong here?

I checked the logs and it shows the images listed.

Requirement for Stretched Network / Cross VDC Networking

Hi,

 

we're currently playing arround in a LAB with the new Cross VDC Networking in vCloud Director 9.7.

 

  • We have two Locations connected with Darkfiber
  • We have two vCenter and two vCloud Director 9.7 Installation (different Management IP Spaces)
  • The Management Networks are connected / routed by an IPSec Connection.
  • Both installations works independently fine, network etc. is "good".

 

  • We was able to Pair both vCloud Director installations on Provider and Tenant side.
  • We changed the NSX Manager in Site #2 to "secondary" and added it to the "primary".
  • We added the Universal Transport Zone
  • We created a Datacenter group with DC's from both locations and added egress points.
  • We was able to add a stretched network and add some VM's to it.

 

Everything works so far, on the primary location, we're able to reach the internet from a test VM.

 

On the "secondary" location, we're able to ping the gateway address from the stretched network and another VM inside the same network on "secondary" site.

but we're unable to reach the internet or the test vm in the other location.

 

What are the network requirements to get this working? I was unable to find all requirements on the net or in the docs.

vCloud director vCPU speed setting(VDC allocation model) and performance metrics(Cassandra DB)

Hi Guys,

 

I have two doubts.Could you please suggest?

 

1) Cassandra DB:- I completed the Cassandra DB setup this in lab before moving in to production.

In lab,1 VCD VM,1 VCD postgress DB VM and 1 Cassandra DB VM. By default,it was 8 parameters in monitoring(after integrating Cassandra DB with VCD cell).

I just added network parameters in configuration file.If i want to add any more parameters in future,should i need to edit the same configuration file ? or should i use the different one(new one as “metrics.groovy_1” ? Please suggest.

2) Its regarding vCPU SPEED setting in allocation model( in VDC).I have a slight confusion about GHZ vs vCPU.

My ESXi server CPU model and speed is mentioned below

Im using  "Allocation pool". Example VDC is given below.By default the vCPU speed is 1 GHZ and the i have given the CPU allocation as 12 GHZ.

Doubt:- If i want to provide 12 vCPU to the same VDC,then i need to change the vCPU speed as 2.6 GHZ(because my ESXi speed is 2.6 GHZ) and then i need to set the CPU allocation as 31.2 GHZ (vCPU speed 2.6 GHZ * 12 VCPU = 31.2 GHZ).

 

Is this right or can i set 31.2 GHZ(CPU allocation) with VCPU speed as 1 GHZ(default one?

Hiding vApp Templates from specific tenants

We have a standard build Windows template that's until now been used for internal only. I have a certain tenant that I don't want to be able to access this template. Is there a way to hide a public template from one tenant?

Stretched L2 Network no TCP Traffic

Hi there,

 

we have a stretched L2 Network with two VDC on two separated sites.

 

Internal Traffic works fine so far. We have 2 egress points, one on each site.

 

when Site A is the active egress point, the VM in Site A can connect to the internet ICMP, TCP, UDP, everything is good.

 

The VM on Site B can reach the internet by ICMP, but i cannot access websites on systems i can ping.

 

When i switch the egress point to Site B, the VM on Site B can access and ping everything, but the VM on site A can only ping and not access the websites anymore.

 

For me, this sounds like firewall issue, but we have a rule which allows all traffic outgoing.

172.24.1.0/24 is our L2 Network CIDR.

Any idea why this is happening?

vCloud Director and Cisco ACI integration

Hi all,

 

I am setting up a new greenfield DC and was just wondering if anyone has any experiencing or knowledge of vCD and Cisco ACI integration? For better or for worse we're not looking at NSX in doing any of the SDN stuff. I know you can use vCD to spin up Edge gateways and DLRs and attach logical switches to them but I was wondering is there the same/similar level of integration with Cisco ACI and the APIC cluster that controls it. Or even if there isn't, how do we expose ACI created dvPGs/networks to vCD?

 

Worse case scenario is that we simply present tenant's dvPG in vCenter to vCD then manually stitch them to the L3 gateway. This is what we've done in the past and unless someone can shed some light on it, will probably continue to do this with ACI.

How to find out the last time a user logged into vCD?

Hi,

 

I am trying to find out an easy way to track the last time a user logged into vCD. I'd like to be able to generate a usage report. I looked around the vCD Postgres database, and I can find a way to see active users in the system, but I could find a table where possible information is saved as to when the last time a user logged in.

 

Is there a way to get this info? Please let me know. Thanks.

vCD Architecture Scale-Out

Hi all,

 

I'm looking at deploying a vCD environment, initially starting with just a single cell and single RabbitMQ server to gauge actual demand/use of vCD functionality. I will be using the 9.7 appliance with an embedded PSQL database. An external NFS transfer server will also be deployed. No load-balancer required as yet since we only have one cell anyway.

 

My question is can we build out an environment at a later date when we actually need to expand? For instance, deploy a single cell now and expand to 2, 3, n-number cells with a load-balancer in front. Can we do the same with RabbitMQ too? I can't seem to find any information regarding cell/environment expansion. It appears that the vCD architecture is designed to support scaling-out but just wanted to confirm.

vCD 9.x + CassandraDB and detailed historical metrics about HardDisk (when VM have different storage profile attached to every disk)

Hi.

We are using cassandra DB with vCD 9.5 and 9.7 in our environments. I think this is know problem but.

 

How configure cassandra to collect performance metrics about specific disks and VM.

Im speaking about situation when EXAMPLE: VM is on GOLD storage, HardDisk1 is on GOLD storage, HardDisk2 is on SILVER storage and HardDisk3 os on BRONZE storage...

According what we know now we can only grab metrics for whole VM and we can't now detailed  charge now our clients id they have disks in separate storage profiles.

 

I found some article from Jon Waite https://kiwicloud.ninja/2017/01/detailed-vm-storage-information-in-vcloud-director/ but there  are information how we can collect metrics which are used today. We would like have historical data (from last month) to correctly charge our clients. If this possible by cassandra ? or maybe is some additional solution...

How to achieve Single URL for Multi Site Setup - Tenant Login

https://cloudportalurlA/provider is single portal address, in case of multi-site will have another portal address i.e. https://cloudportalB/provider - this make sense from Admin point of you.

 

If my sites are Active / Active and offered to customers, do I need to give them separate URL to access their Organization within different sites? - Isn't there a central way, considering I might grow few more sites in span of time and giving them multiple URLs to access is not a viable option?

Creating vApp Network in HTML5 Portal throws error VCD 9.7.0

I get the following error in the HTML5 Tenant portal when trying to create an Isolated vApp Network as an Org Administrator.  I am able to successfully create the vApp Network using the flash tenant portal, so I do not believe it is a permissions issue.  I get the same error when trying to create a routed vApp network.   The only network currently added to the vApp is the single OrgNetwork that exists within the DemoCustomer organization VDC.

 

Here are the logs from the vCloud cell, no error is caught:

vCloud Director Client Integration Plug-in

Hi,

I cannot get the client integration plug-in in vCloud director to work. I have installed the correct version but it is not recognized as being installed and still prompts me to install it.

I have followed the instructions in the article below:

vCloud Director Client Integration Plugin is not working

 

and I tried the solution in VMware Knowledge Base  (KB 2150215). I have tried the 3 supported web browsers: Chrome, Firefox and IE but nothing seems to work.

Can anybody help with that?

 

My OS is windows 7.

How to run cloud-init in vApp VMs? or is it not possible?

Hi,

 

Is it possible to run standard cloud-init for VMs in vCD vApp. How do you pass on additional scripts, network configuration, user configuration etc. to VMs. There is something called VM customization but that is a bit restricted as compared to cloud-init. Is it even possible to do this thing?

Unable to delete VDC due to org VDC network in use

Hello there.

 

I trying to remove VDC in vCloud Director, but can't do it. The problem with VDC network. When deleting it vCD answers "[ 42fa690c-2936-4525-9f32-5eae43f5b77e ] Entity LSW-VDC cannot be deleted, because it is in use.". All vApps in this VDC was removed, catalogs cleared.

I know that removing part of vCD infrastructure in vCenter Server brokes vCD and it will need to be reinstalled.

How to resolve isuue and/or safely remove unnecessary VDC ?

Reading logs has not given additional info.

Create new VM from Template -> Change CPU / RAM

Hello,

i don't understand the reason why the CPU/RAM setting is fixed with a VM template.

I have a Windows 2016 template. I'd like to create a new VM from this template and change the hardware specs of the new VM during creation.

But i can't. Why? Or is there something i'm missing?

VM with Public IP - from vCenter 5.5 to vCD 9.7

Hi all,

 

I have the following scenario: migrating from vCenter 5.5 to vCloud Director 9.7 + NSX and I'm trying to map how to do things in order to have the same result from my customers perspective, as explained below.

Our current solution based on vCenter 5.5 has a shared VM per ESXi hosts cluster with iptables+ebtables to act as firewall and router to/from the internet. Our customer's VM (VM1) receives a public IP address via DHCP at deploy time and it should stay static and attached to that VM as long as it lives. So when user logs into the VM1 console she should see the public address 200.10.10.11 configured within VM's network interface.

 

Is it possible to have the same scenario with vCloud Diretor 9.7 + NSX 6.4 ?

In case of affirmative answer, how should I configure vdc-edge, vdc-net and vapp/vm without turning on edge advanced mode ?

Trunk links in vCD

Morning All,

 

I use vCD and within vCD we use third party firewalls (i.e. not NSX Edges).  I want to present my Org with a trunk link in an official and supported VMware method.

 

Now I'm sure this is the article everyone will find:

While I'm sure this will work, it doesn't seem official.

 

vCD 9.0 documentation claims trunk links are now supported but I can't find the documention that tells me how to implement it as best practise.

vApp is losing auto NAT when re-configuring main network

Hi,

When deploying template from organization X to organization Y

my main network (lets call it mgmt) mgmt is losing configuration. so i reconfigured mgmt to the right configuration and all of my VMs inside my vapp gets natted.

 

 

But when im doing the same action with CLI with this command

Get-CIVAppNetwork -VApp $NewVapp -name *mgmt-192* | Set-CIVAppNetwork -FirewallEnabled:$false -NatEnabled:$true -ParentOrgNetwork $Parentnetwork

the window from the picture above gets empty

But when I click on add I can see the lost vms->

So the question is how to reconfigure the mgmt network and keep all the vms auto natted?

is there any way to add all the vms again with CLI ?
